FAQ

Q: What is this contest about?
A: We want you to create a machinima music video for one of Jonathan’s songs - Bacteria or Todd the T1000, both of which you can download, exclusively and free of charge here and here. You have free reign to go crazy with this, and your video can be as abstract or as obvious as you like. There are prizes for the videos that get the most votes, and you can win just by registering to vote!

Q: Who is eligible to enter the contest?
A: Check out the Official rules for details, but the skinny is this: You must be a citizen of the UK, at least 18 years old and have Internet access. You cannot enter if you are affiliated with Rustlers, Jonathan Coulton or Machinima, Inc. – cool with that?

Q: What are the contest dates?
A:
Submission Period: June 20, 2008 - August 1, 2008
Voting Period: August 2, 2008 - August 9, 2008
Winners Announced: on or about August 15, 2008

Q: Is there an entry fee?
A: No entry fee and no need to purchase anything to enter or win. Just give us your soul...

Q: Am I allowed multiple entries?
A: You can enter one machinima music video per song. Just make sure that each video is submitted separately. An entry will be disqualified if it has more than one video associated with it.

Q: Can I change my entry once it is submitted?
A: Machinima.com know no mercy. All entries will be final, so make sure everything is perfect before you hit the submit button!

Q: How are the winners chosen?
A: We will select the 10 finalists from all of the entries. The Three Winners (First Place, Second Place and Third Place) will be chosen through community votes.  Machinima.com can select a winner if there's a tie, or reject a winner if the content is deemed unsuitable. See the Official rules for details.

A: Contestants must choose one (1) of the two available songs for use in their entry.  The entire song must be used and unchanged in the entry.  Only one song may be used per entry.  Permissible songs for contest use are listed below:

Bacteria
Todd the T1000

No other songs will be considered eligible for the contest.  Videos may include a maximum of 30 seconds of story before and/or after the song.  Only the selected song may be used in the entry.  Do not include any other music in the submission.

The contest holder reserves the right to request changes to submitted entries.  Contestants will need to have the time and resources available to make any changes requested by the contest holder to be considered eligible for placement.

Q: What are the technical video guidelines for submitting my video?
A: Here are the suggested format guidelines:
Resolution: Minimum of 320x240, maximum of 800x600.
Framerate: Minimum 20 frames per second.
Audio: Minimum 22khz 16-bit audio.
Size: 100 Mb.

Q: How do I keep my video submission under 100Mb?
A: Because everyone uses different software to convert their videos to WMV, MOV, or AVI, you will have to consult your software manual or look online for some help. Some areas to consider are: higher compression, shorter time, smaller window/screen size, and/or lowering sound quality to mono (single channel) and lower quality. You don’t want the final quality to be so bad that it detracts from the idea you are pitching, so review your final file to make sure it displays well and looks and sounds legible. It may compress further in our video player.

Q: How do I view Flash files or the Flash video player?
A: You can download the free Flash Player by clicking here. (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/)
