Stanford University just recently had a meeting discussing law's behind machinima making (the do's and dont's)

Kotaku:

Just wanted to get the community informed about what is going on, and what to look for in the future.

Looks like we're finally getting REAL attention.

I don't see this having much weight on what we can and can't do in the future.

Cool. I do hope this doesn't end up restraining us from making certain machinima. Although i doubt it.

This is pretty much what every machinimator should be following anyway, make sure your game allows it, make sure you don't have copy written music, if you are not sure then you probably shouldn't do it unless otherwise noted. etc etc.

Hopefully this will just strike some fear into the 13 year olds who throw in what ever they want and think its ok.

When it comes to copyrights, yes we can be controlled. There ARE do's and don't's of machinima. Most machinima isn't actually even legal. Halo, Sims 2, and WoW machinima are really the only kinds of machinima that is legal since Bungie, Maxis, and Blizzard all added extra content to their User Agreements that says that it's okay to use their footage from their games. Look at GTA IV for example. Take 2 had a shit-fest when GTA IV came out. They had YouTube take down any video that showed gameplay from the game.

I'm pretty sure, they can. Though Bungie has given more users rights in terms of in-game content, to be used for machinimas.

I'd like to see valve's take on machinimas, there probably is a post somewhere.

They basically allowed machinima when they gave us the Source SDK, but yes I believe they added something in their User Agreement as well.

You can't make money off of it. It can only be for non-commercial use.

Nintendo hasn't come out and said "Don't make machinima with Super Smash Bros. Brawl" but it can be assumed that they are adverse to it, seeing as they are constantly cracking down on hacking/hackers (hacking is how we get the free camera, custom textures, etc. and is therefore in my opinion necessary).

Even still, I persist in making Brawl machinima seeing as I don't have a better engine for machinima, and don't want one. Until Reggie breaks down my door and points Samus' arm cannon at me, there's no way I'm stopping my machinimating.

Machinima is a rising new medium, that im sure will be BIG in 10 years.

Machinima gets more and more publicity. It's been mentioned in the Wallstreet Journal, and there is a department of STANFORD UNIVERSITY for it. im glad to be a part of this rising pop culture phenomenon.
