Machinima 101 Tip of the Day - WoW Edition: Be careful of trendy video editing sites

This may not apply as much to the World of Warcraft community, but I know that many educators in Second Life will suffer at the hands of this. They recommend that their students and fellow machinimators upload to sites like Jumpcut and edit their videos there. However, given this economy, those same sites are ending up in what tech enthusiasts refer to as “the deadpool.”
Video hosting sites seem to be the new trend online. Everyone noticed the buyout of YouTube and flooded the market with their own knockoff. Not many can withstand the bandwidth costs, though, and they go under. Please be careful of these sites, because you may not be able to download and retrieve your previous works!
Excellent advice! Never EVER rely solely on one of these sites to archive / host your work. DivX’s Stage6 disappeared almost overnight; Brightcove recently booted all their non-paying users. Anything can happen, so be smart and always have a plan B in action.
